Urlmon.dll Error Windows 10

Overview of Urlmon.dll

What Is Urlmon.dll?

Urlmon.dll is a type of DLL file associated with Microsoft April 2012 Security Release ISO Image developed by Microsoft for the Windows Operating System. The latest known version of Urlmon.dll is 1.0.0.0, which was produced for Windows. This DLL file carries a popularity rating of 1 stars and a security rating of 'UNKNOWN'.

What Are DLL Files?

DLL ('dynamic link library') files such as urlmon.dll are small programs, similar to EXE ('executable') files, which allow multiple software programs to share the same functionality (eg. printing).

For example, let's say you are running Windows and editing a document in Microsoft Word. The DLL file that controls printing does not need to load unless it's function is needed - eg. you decide to print your document. When you select 'Print', Microsoft Word calls the printer DLL file, and it is loaded into memory (RAM) at that time. If you want to print a document in another program, Adobe Acrobat for example, that same printer DLL file will be used as well.

Why Do I Have DLL Errors?

Because they are shared files, DLL files exist outside of the software application itself. Although this provides many benefits for software developers, this separation also provides an opportunity for problems to occur.

Quite simply, if Windows cannot properly load your urlmon.dll file, you will encounter an error message. Please see 'Causes of urlmon.dll Errors' below for more information.

When Do DLL Errors Occur?

DLL errors, such as those associated with urlmon.dll, most often occur during computer startup, program startup, or while trying to use a specific function in your program (eg. printing).

Common Urlmon.dll Error Messages

The most common urlmon.dll errors that can appear on a Windows-based computer are:

  • 'Urlmon.dll not found.'
  • 'The file urlmon.dll is missing.'
  • 'Urlmon.dll Access Violation.'
  • 'Cannot register urlmon.dll.'
  • 'Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32urlmon.dll.'
  • 'Cannot start Microsoft April 2012 Security Release ISO Image. A required component is missing: urlmon.dll. Please install Microsoft April 2012 Security Release ISO Image again.'
  • 'This application failed to start because urlmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'

These DLL error messages can appear during program installation, while a urlmon.dll-related software program (eg. Microsoft April 2012 Security Release ISO Image) is running, during Windows startup or shutdown, or even during the installation of the Windows operating system. Keeping track of when and where your urlmon.dll error occurs is a critical piece of information in troubleshooting the problem.

Since installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB978207) about a week ago (or shortly after then) I started having problems with lots of programs crashing or refusing to start all all. All of the ones that give a meaningful crash report pinpoint urlmon.dll as the source of the problem. This only seems to be affecting the 32-bit version of urlmon.dll (in the SysWOW64 folder), since I can run IE 64-bit just fine. I can only assume that the file somehow got corrupted during the process of installing the update.

How can I revert the installed update? It's not showing up in the View Installed Updates window. Failing that, (or if it turns out that's not the cause of the problem) how can I get a clean copy of the file from my install CDs? I tried booting up the CD and getting a recovery console, but using the 64-bit CD the SysWOW64 folder was pretty much empty (stands to reason), and using the 32-bit CD it wouldn't give me a console at all (on account of this being a 64-bit install). If anyone has any ideas, that'd be grand. I tried sfc /scannow, and that confirmed that there is a problem in urlmon.dll, but it said it was unable to repair the file. I'd rather not have to do a full reinstall over a single file, especially since this is a relatively new install anyway.

I've included the crash log from Internet Explorer (32-bit), but other programs are giving similar results.
