Brushes let you stylize the appearance of paths. You canapply brush strokes to existing paths, or you can use the Paintbrushtool to draw a path and apply a brush stroke simultaneously.
There are differenttypes of brushes in Illustrator: calligraphic, scatter, art, pattern, andbristle. You can achieve the following effects using these brushes:
Createstrokes that resemble those drawn with the angled point of acalligraphic pen and are drawn along the center of the path. Whenyou use the Blob Brush tool, you can paint with a calligraphic brushand automatically expand the brush stroke into a fill shape thatmerges with other filled objects of the same color that intersector are adjacent in stacking order.
Dispersecopies of an object (such as a ladybug or a leaf) along the path.
Stretch a brushshape (such as Rough Charcoal) or object shape evenly along thelength of the path.
Create brush strokes with the appearance of a natural brushwith bristles.
Paint apattern—made of individual tiles—that repeats along thepath. Pattern brushes can include up to five tiles, for the sides, inner corner, outer corner, beginning, and end of the pattern.
Scatter brushes and Pattern brushes can often achieve the sameeffect. However, one way in which they differ is that Pattern brushesfollow the path exactly, while Scatter brushes do not.
The Brushes panel (Window > Brushes) displaysbrushes for the current file. Whenever you select a brush in a brushlibrary, it is automatically added to the Brushes panel. Brushesthat you create and store in the Brushes panel are associated onlywith the current file, which means that each Illustrator file can havea different set of brushes in its Brushes panel.
- Choose any of the following from thepanel menu: Show Calligraphic Brushes, Show Scatter Brushes, ShowArt Brushes, Show Bristle Brushes, Show Pattern Brushes.
- Choose Thumbnail View or List Viewfrom the panel menu.
- Drag a brush to a new location. Youcan move brushes only within their type. For example, you cannotmove a Calligraphic brush to the Scatter brush area.
- Drag the brush onto the New Brush button orchoose Duplicate Brush from the Brushes panel menu.
- Select the brushes and click the DeleteBrush button . Youcan select brushes that aren’t used in a document by choosing SelectAll Unused from the Brushes panel menu.
Brush libraries (Window >Brush Libraries > [library]) arecollections of preset brushes that come with Illustrator. You canopen multiple brush libraries to browse through their contents andselect brushes. You can also open brush libraries using the Brushespanel menu.
Note:
To automatically open a brushlibrary when you start Illustrator, choose Persistent from the brushlibrary’s panel menu.
Copy brushes from a brush libraryto the Brushes panel
- Drag the brushes to the Brushes panelor choose Add To Brushes from the brush library’s panel menu.
Import brushes into the Brushespanel from another file
- Choose Window > BrushesLibraries > Other Library and select the file.
- In the Brush Library panel, click on the individual brushdefinition or all the brush definitions that you need to importand select Add To Brushes from the Brush Library panel menu (flyoutmenu).
- Add the brushes you want to the Brushespanel, and delete any brushes you don’t want.
- Choose Save Brush Library from the Brushes panel menu, and place the new library file in one of the following folders sothat it will appear in the Brush Libraries menu when you restartIllustrator:
- (Windows) User/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator <version number> Settings/Brushes
- (Mac OS) Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator <version number> Settings/Brushes

Replace <version number> with the following values, depending on the version of Illustrator that you have installed on your system. For more information, see Replace Illustrator version number.
Note:
If you place the file in a different folder, you can open the library by choosing Window > BrushLibraries > Other Library and selecting the libraryfile.
Youcan apply brush strokes to a path created with any drawing tool, including the Pen tool, Pencil tool, or basic shape tools.
Select the path, and then select a brushin a brush library, the Brushes panel, or the Control panel.
Drag a brush onto the path. If the path alreadyhas brush strokes applied to it, then the new brush replaces theold brush.
Note:
If you want to apply a different brushto the path and want to use the brush stroke settings used withthe original brush, hold down Alt (Win) or Option (Mac OS) whenclicking the new brush you want to apply.
Draw paths and apply brush strokessimultaneously
- Select a brush in a brush library or the Brushespanel.
- Position the pointer where you want the brush stroketo begin, and drag to draw a path. A dotted line follows the pointeras you drag.
To draw an open path, release the mousebutton when the path is the desired shape.
To draw a closed shape, hold down Alt (Windows)or Option (Mac OS) as you drag. The Paintbrush tool displaysa small loop . Releasethe mouse button (but not the Alt or Option key) when you are readyto close the shape.
Illustrator sets down anchor points asyou draw. The number of anchor points is determined by the lengthand complexity of the path and by the Paintbrush tolerance settings.
Tip: To adjust the shape of a brushed path after youfinish drawing it, first select the path. Then position the Paintbrushtool on the path, and drag until the path is the desired shape. You can use the technique to extend a brushed path as well as change theshape of the path between the existing end points.
Double-clickthe Paintbrush tool to set the following options:
Controls how far you have to move your mouse or stylus beforeIllustrator adds a new anchor point to the path. For example, aFidelity value of 2.5 means that tool movements of less than 2.5pixels aren’t registered. Fidelity can range from 0.5 to 20 pixels;the higher the value, the smoother and less complex the path.
Controls the amount of smoothing that Illustrator applieswhen you use the tool. Smoothness can range from 0% to 100%; thehigher the percentage, the smoother the path.
Applies a fill to the path. This option is most useful whendrawing closed paths.
Determines whether Illustrator keeps the path selected after youdraw it.
Determines whether you can change an existing path with thePaintbrush tool.
Determines how close your mouse or stylus must be to an existingpath to edit the path with the Paintbrush tool. This option is only availablewhen the Edit Selected Paths option is selected.
- In the Brushes panel, choose Remove Brush Stroke fromthe panel menu or click the Remove Brush Stroke button .
You can also remove a brush stroke by selecting the Basic brush from the Brushes panel or Control panel.
You can convert brushstrokes into outlined paths to edit the individual components ofa brushed path.
Illustrator places the components of the expanded pathin a group. Within the group are a path and a subgroup containingthe brush stoke outlines.
Youcan create and customize calligraphic, scatter, art, pattern, andbristle brushes depending on your requirement. For scatter, art,and pattern brushes, you must first create the artwork.
Followthese guidelines when creating artwork for brushes:
Theartwork cannot contain gradients, blends, other brush strokes, mesh objects, bitmap images, graphs, placed files, or masks.
For art and pattern brushes, the artwork cannot contain type.To achieve a brush-stroke effect with type, create an outline ofthe type and then create a brush with the outline.
For pattern brushes, create up to five pattern tiles (dependingon the brush configuration), and add the tiles to the Swatches panel.
Note:
You can make the brushes you create available for every new document by adding the brush definition to the New Document Profile. For more information on new document profiles, see About new document profiles.
- Forscatter and art brushes, select the artwork you want to use. Forpattern brushes, you can select the artwork for the side tile, butit isn’t necessary. For detailed guidelines to create pattern brushes, see Guidelinesfor constructing pattern tiles. To know more about patternbrush options, see Patternbrush options.
Note:
If you do not want to see a seam between the artworkpieces used to create the pattern brush, turn off the Anti-Aliasingoption from Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or Illustrator> General > Preferences (Mac OS).
- Click the New Brush button inthe Brushes panel. Alternatively, drag the selected artwork to theBrushes panel.
- Select the type of brush you want to create, and click OK.
- In the Brush Options dialog box, enter a name for thebrush, set brush options, and click OK.
- Tochange the options for a brush, double-click the brush in the Brushespanel. Set the brush options and click OK. If the current documentcontains brushed paths that use the modified brush, a message appears.Click Apply To Strokes to change pre-existing strokes. Click LeaveStrokes to leave pre-existing strokes unchanged, and apply the modifiedbrush to new strokes only.
- To change the artwork used by a scatter, art, or patternbrush, drag the brush into your artwork and make the changes youwant. Then Alt‑drag (Windows) or Option-drag (Mac OS) the modifiedbrush onto the original brush in the Brushes panel.
- To modify a brushed path without updating the correspondingbrush, select the path and click the Options Of Selected Objectbutton inthe Brushes panel or select options of selected object from theBrushes panel menu (flyout menu).
You can specify different options for the different typesof brushes. To change the options for a brush, double-click thebrush in the Brushes panel.
Scatter, Art, and Pattern brushes all have identical optionsfor colorization.
To customize a stroke instance for Art Brushes or Pattern Brushes, click the Options of Selected Objects icon in the Brushes Paneland set the stroke options. For art brush you can set the strokewidth along with flipping, colorization, and overlapping options. For pattern brush, you can set the scaling options along with flipping, fitting, and colorization options.
Determines the angle of rotation for the brush.Drag the arrowhead in the preview, or enter a value in the Anglebox.
Determines roundness of the brush. Drag a black dot in thepreview away from or toward the center, or enter a value in theRoundness box. The higher the value, the greater the roundness.
Determines the diameter of the brush. Use the Diameter slider, or entera value in the Diameter box.
The pop‑up list to the rightof each option lets you control variations in the shape of the brush.Select one of the following options:
Creates a brush with a fixed angle, roundness, or diameter.
Creates a brush with random variations in angle, roundness,or diameter. Enter a value in the Variation box to specify the rangewithin which the brush characteristic can vary. For example, whenthe Diameter value is 15 and the Variation value is 5, the diametercan be 10, or 20, or any value in between.
Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameterbased on the pressure of a drawing stylus. This option is most usefulwhen used with Diameter. It is available only if you have a graphicstablet. Enter a value in the Variation box to specify how much moreor less than the original value the brush characteristic will vary. For example, when the Roundness value is 75% and the Variationvalue is 25%, the lightest stroke is 50% and the heaviest strokeis 100%. The lighter the pressure, the more angular the brush stroke.
Creates a brush that varies in diameter based on manipulationof the stylus wheel. This option is intended to be used with anairbrush pen that has a stylus wheel on its barrel and with a graphicstablet that can detect that pen.

Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameterbased on the tilt of a drawing stylus. This option is most usefulwhen used with Roundness. It is available only if you have a graphicstablet that can detect how close to vertical the pen is.
Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameterbased on the bearing of the pen. This option is most useful whenused to control the angle of calligraphic brushes, especially whenyou’re using the brush like a paintbrush. It is available only ifyou have a graphics tablet that can detect the direction in whichthe pen is tilted.
Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameterbased on how the drawing stylus pen tip is rotated. This optionis most useful when used to control the angle of calligraphic brushes, especially when you’re using the brush like a flat pen. It is availableonly if you have a graphics tablet that can detect this type ofrotation.
Colorization options for scatter, art, and pattern brushes
Thecolors that a scatter, art, or pattern brush paints depend on thecurrent stroke color and the colorization method of the brush. Toset the colorization method, select one of the following optionsin the Brush Options dialog box:
Displays colors as they appear in the brush in the Brushespanel. Choose None to keep a brush the same colors as in the Brushespanel.
Displays the brush stroke in tints of the stroke color. Portionsof the art that are black become the stroke color, portions thataren’t black become tints of the stroke color, and white remainswhite. If you use a spot color as the stroke, Tints generates tintsof the spot color. Choose Tints for brushes that are in black and white,or when you want to paint a brush stroke with a spot color.
Displays the brush stroke in tints and shades of the stroke color.Tints and Shades maintains black and white, and everything between becomesa blend from black to white through the stroke color. Because blackis added you may not be able to print to a single plate when usingTints and Shades with a spot color. Choose Tints and Shades forbrushes that are in grayscale.
Uses the key color in the brush artwork, as shown in theKey Color box. (By default, the key color is the most prominentcolor in the art.) Everything in the brush artwork that is the keycolor becomes the stroke color. Other colors in the brush artworkbecome colors related to the stroke color. Hue Shift maintains black, white, and gray. Choose Hue Shift for brushes that use multiplecolors. To change the key color, click the Key Color eyedropper, move the eyedropper to the preview in the dialog box, and clickthe color you want to use as the key color. The color in the KeyColor box changes. Click the eyedropper again to deselect it.

Bristle brush allows you to create brush strokes with theappearance of a natural brush with bristles. With Bristle brush, you can:
Free simple writing program. Create natural and fluid brush strokes that simulatethe effects of painting with real brushes and media such as watercolor.
Select brushes from a predefined library or create your ownbrushes from the provided tip shapes such as round, flat, or fan.You can also set other brush characteristics such as bristle length, stiffness, and paint opacity.
When you use Bristle brush with a graphic tablet, Illustratorinteractively tracks the movements of the stylus over the tablet. It interprets all aspects of its orientation and pressure inputat any point along a drawing path. Illustrator provides the outputthat is modeled on the stylus’s x-axis position, y-axis position, pressure, tilt, bearing, and rotation.
A cursor annotator that simulates the tip of an actual brushis displayed when using a tablet and stylus that support rotation. This annotator does not appear when other input devices such asa mouse are used. The annotator is also disabled while using theprecise cursors.
Note:
Use the Wacom Intuos 3 or higher tablet with Art (6D) pento explore the full capabilities of the Bristle brush. Illustratorcan interpret all 6-degrees of freedom that this device combinationprovides. However, other devices including the Wacom Grip pen andArt brush pen may not be able to interpret some attributes suchas rotation. These uninterpreted attributes are treated as constantsin the resulting brush strokes.
While using a mouse, only x and y-axis movements are recorded.Other inputs, such as tilt, bearing, rotation, and pressure remainfixed resulting in even and consistent strokes.
For Bristle brush strokes, feedback is displayed when you dragthe tool. This feedback provides an approximate view of the finalstroke.
Note:
Bristle brush strokes are made up of several overlapping, filled transparent paths. These paths, like any other filled pathin Illustrator, interact with the paint of other objects, includingother bristle bush paths. However, the fill for strokes does not self-interact.Therefore, layered, individual, bristle brush strokes build up andinteract with each other, but a single stoke scrubbed back and forthin place does not interact with itself and build up.
Create a brush definition by clicking the new brush iconor selecting New Brush from the Brushes panel menu.
of the bristle brush. Maximum length of the brush name canbe 31 characters.
Select from ten different brush models, which provide a different drawingexperience and appearance of bristle brush paths.
Brush size is the diameter of the brush. Like a physicalmedia brush, the Bristle brush diameter is measured at the pointwhere the bristles meet the handle (the ferrule). Specify the brushsize using the slider or directly entering the size in the availabletext field. Range can be between 1mm and 10mm.
Brush sizefrom the original Brush definition is displayed in Brush previewin the Brushes panel.
note: The bracket keys, [ and ], are usedas shortcuts for decreasing and increasing the size, respectively. The bracket keys increase and decrease the size in 1mm increments.
The bristle length starts from the point where the bristles meetthe handle of the bristle tip. The length of the bristles can bespecified in the same way as other bristle brush options, by draggingthe Bristle Length slider, or specifying the exact value in theBristle Length field (25% to 300%).
The bristle density is the number of bristles in a specifiedarea of the brush neck. You can set this attribute in the same wayas other bristle brush options. It ranges between 1% and 100%, andis calculated based on the brush size and bristle length.
The bristle thickness can vary from fine to coarse (between 1%and 100%). Set the bristle thickness like other bristle brush settings,by dragging the slider, or specifying the thickness value in thefield.
This option lets you set the opacity of the paint being used. Thepaint opacity can vary between 1% (Translucent) and 100% (opaque). The specified opacity value is the maximum opacity used in the brush. You can use the numeric keys[0-9] as shortcut to set the opacityof bristle brush strokes where:
0 = 100
1 = 10%
9 = 90
In other cases, for example, if youenter 35 in succession, the opacity is set to 35%, and if you enter356 in succession the opacity value is set to 56 (last two digits).Any string of digits that ends with 00 are set as 100%.
Stiffness implies the rigidness of the bristles. If you seta low bristle stiffness value, the bristles are flexible. They becomemore rigid when you set a higher value. The bristle stiffness rangesbetween 1% and 100%.
Click OK to create the brush definition with the chosen settings.
With the brush tool selected, and a Bristle brush definitionchosen in the Brushes panel, you can create artwork using the Bristlebrush.
If you try to print, save, or flatten transparency in a documentwith more than 30 bristle brush strokes, a warning message is displayed. These warnings are displayed when you save, print, and flatten filecontent.
